P22 The Spirit of Griffith Park

This is the site where the sculpture will go.

About the Artist:  Casey McCaughn

Casey’s Relationship with Griffith Park began in 1986.

For several years, Casey Lived in the apartment complex just across the river.

She would hike the trails and look at all the good rocks and sticks.

Her favorite trail goes to Beacon Hill.

She wrote a song called “From the Top of the Hill”

She recorded that song with Butch Trucks of the Allman Bros.

She made the arduous climb to the top of Beacon Hill to celebrate overcoming breast cancer. (This is a similar video from 2023 on one of Casey’s many hikes)

In 2009 : Casey Donated her time, talent, scaffolding, varnish and quite a bit of sandpaper to create this 14-foot monument of Engineer Casey Jones at Travel Town in Griffith Park.

Special thanks to Tom LaBonge, Debbie Roland and Joe Salaices

They had the vision to bring this project to reality.

I told them I wanted to so something “Lasting and Meaningful”

In 2016: Casey again donated her time and several gallons of expensive varnish to refinish the entire sculpture at no charge.

In 2023:  Casey donated her time and more varnish to refresh the sculpture again.  She even invented a 12-foot tool so she could spray varnish on top without having to rent scaffolding again.

In 2023: Casey chose Griffith Park as the place to Debut her new carving “The Essence of Being” and it was covered on the news.

Artist’s Proposal for Bronze Sculpture of Mountain Lion P-22

P22 The Spirit of Griffith Park

**Artist:** Casey McCaughn

**Date:** December 2024-January 2025

Project Overview

The proposed artwork honors P-22, the iconic mountain lion of Griffith Park, whose life represents resilience, adaptability, and the delicate balance between urban development and wildlife preservation. This life-sized bronze sculpture will be installed in Griffith Park, symbolizing the enduring spirit of nature amidst the bustling cityscape of Los Angeles.

Concept and Design

The sculpture will depict P-22 in a poised and contemplative stance, capturing his majesty and the mystery of his life in the park.

- **Dimensions:** Approximately 6 feet long, 3 feet tall at the shoulders, and mounted on a naturalistic base resembling the rugged terrain of Griffith Park.

- **Material:** High-quality bronze with a patina finish, designed to withstand outdoor conditions.

- **Style:** Realistic with artistic flourishes to emphasize his iconic status.

The sculpture will be interactive, allowing visitors to connect with the piece by viewing it from multiple angles and engaging with interpretive signage about P-22's story, conservation, and the challenges of urban wildlife.

Location

The proposed site is near the Griffith Park Visitor’s Center, ensuring high visibility and access to visitors.

Goals and Impact

The sculpture aims to:

1. Tell the love story and celebrate the life and legacy of P-22.

2. Raise awareness about urban wildlife conservation.

3. Enhance Griffith Park as a cultural and educational destination.

The most important part of any sculpture is the expression on the subject’s face.  Whether it’s a human or an animal the expression gives it life.  It makes the sculpture look like somebody’s home and they are thinking something or having an emotion.  P22 will be surveying his territory like the Rock Star is is.
